European Parliament elections have stirred significant global interest, marked by the rise of the far right and the erosion of votes for centrist parties. Post-election, there are concerns that anti-immigrant sentiments will surge in Europe, potentially leading to the marginalization of Turks and Muslims. How does Ankara interpret these developments?

Following the far-right National Rally’s (RN) victory in France, President Emmanuel Macron dissolved parliament, calling for early elections with RN expected to lead in parliamentary polls.

In Belgium, the ruling Flemish Liberal Open Vld only secured 5% of the votes, prompting Prime Minister Alexander De Croo’s resignation.

Italy witnessed the dominance of the far-right Prime Minister Georgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party in the elections.

The upcoming European Parliament term is expected to prioritize anti-immigrant policies, potentially exacerbating Turkophobia and Islamophobia.

Journalist Hande Firat, citing Turkish security sources, suggests that Türkiye may face further challenges in its accession process. Firat notes this isn’t exclusive to Türkiye but extends to Balkan countries as well. She writes:

Europe aims to maintain a cautious distance in Turkish membership while seeking to enhance trade ties. The rising far-right’s realpolitik in Europe prioritizes the economy, new market quests, and intermediary nations. Türkiye’s burgeoning profile and focus on development projects position it as both a bridge nation and a significant market. Far-right European parties, perceiving the expanding influence of U.S. and China, are inclined to prioritize their own spheres of influence. This underscores Türkiye’s potential prominence in bilateral and economic relationships.
