In recent months, tens of thousands of Russian citizens have begun to leave Türkiye, particularly from the cities of Antalya and Istanbul.

For years, Russians have been among the top nationalities obtaining residence permits in Türkiye, making their sudden departure a matter of curiosity.

Significant increase in departures in 2023

According to reports in the Russian media, over 50,000 Russians have departed from Türkiye.

Data released by the Turkish Directorate General of Migration Management, reported by Ria, reveals that the exodus, which started last year, has continued to rise, reaching 44,000 departures in 2023 alone.

Soaring inflation drives Russians away

The primary reason cited in Russian media for this mass departure is the soaring inflation in Türkiye, which has severely impacted the cost of living, especially in the food and service sectors.

Dining out, once affordable for both locals and foreigners, has now become a luxury due to skyrocketing prices, even surpassing the average costs in Europe. With restaurant prices in Türkiye, even when measured in Euros, now outstripping those of Europe’s most upscale venues, the allure of living in Turkish cities like Antalya and Istanbul has significantly diminished.

This economic pressure has accelerated the return of many foreign residents to their home countries.

Continuing trend expected

The exodus is particularly pronounced in Antalya, where tens of thousands of Russian citizens have left. This trend shows no signs of abating soon, as economic conditions continue to challenge the viability of living in Türkiye for many foreign nationals.
