Danish PM is hit by man in public

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was struck by a man on Friday evening while on Kultorvet Square in Copenhagen, according to a statement from her office. The Prime Minister’s office stated that Frederiksen was “shocked by the incident” but did not provide further details.

The statement read, “Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was hit by a man Friday evening on Kultorvet in Copenhagen. The man was subsequently arrested.”

This incident follows a series of attacks on politicians across Europe, including the recent shooting of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on May 15. Fico was shot four times at close range while greeting supporters after a government meeting in Handlova. Despite the assassination attempt, Fico survived and underwent two lengthy surgeries at a nearby hospital.

EU leaders swiftly condemned the attack on Frederiksen. European Parliament President Roberta Metsola expressed solidarity with the Danish Prime Minister, stating, “Violence has no place in politics.” EU chief Charles Michel echoed Metsola’s sentiment, condemning the assault as a “cowardly act of aggression.”

Copenhagen police confirmed the incident involving the Prime Minister but refrained from providing additional details. “We have one person arrested in the case, which we are now investigating. At this time, we have no further comments or remarks on the case,” the police stated.

Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke expressed his dismay over the incident, emphasizing that such events should not occur in Denmark. “I must say that it shakes all of us who are close to her,” Heunicke remarked on social media. “Something like this must not happen in our beautiful, safe, and free country.”
