US strikes Houthi targets in Yemen
United States Central Command (CENTCOM) forces successfully engaged and destroyed four unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen in a self-defense operation on March 22, CENTCOM said in a post on social media platform X on Friday.
The post added that the UAVs were launched between approximately 4:22 a.m. and 11:10 p.m. Sanaa time.
During this period, the Houthi group launched four anti-ship ballistic missiles from Yemen toward the Red Sea, according to the report.
No injuries or damage were reported by the U.S., coalition, or commercial ships, CENTCOM noted.
In response, CENTCOM said its forces conducted “self-defense strikes against three Houthi underground storage facilities in Iranian-backed Houthi terrorist-controlled areas of Yemen.”
The statement also emphasized the impact of Houthi attacks, citing the deaths of three mariners, the sinking of a commercial vessel lawfully transiting the Red Sea, disruption of humanitarian aid to Yemen, harm to Middle East economies, and environmental damage.
Yemen’s Houthi group has been targeting cargo ships in the Red Sea that are owned or operated by Israeli companies or are involved in transporting goods to and from Israel in solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which has faced Israeli attacks since Oct. 7.
The Red Sea is among the world’s busiest sea routes for oil and fuel shipments.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently announced the launch of a multinational mission, Operation Prosperity Guardian, aimed at countering Houthi attacks.
