Germany must be combat-ready by 2029, says Defense Minister Pistorius
In his speech at the Federal Parliament, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized the need for Germany to be combat-ready by 2029. “We must assume a deterrent role to prevent the worst-case scenario,” he stated.
Highlighting the necessity for financing, equipment, and personnel, Pistorius said, “In an emergency, we need young men and women who can defend this country.”
The German minister pointed out that Russia has transitioned to a war economy and continues to rearm. He remarked, “We should not believe that (Russian President Vladimir) Putin will stop at Ukraine’s borders if he goes that far. Russia poses a threat to Georgia, Moldova, and ultimately NATO, which is why we must continue to provide military support to Ukraine. We must not neglect our own defense and operational readiness.”
Pistorius also urged parliamentarians to support the government’s plan to significantly increase defense spending for Ukraine.
