Greek media spotlights Erdogan-Mitsotakis summit, with Ta Nea’s Turkish headline ‘Kazan-Kazan,’ focusing on fostering Aegean peace

As the expectations for the critical summit between President Erdogan and Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis ramp up, the Greek media, especially the ‘Ta Nea’ newspaper, is extensively covering the upcoming meeting.

The rapprochement process between Türkiye and Greece, which has been going on for 15 months, has been closely followed by the frequent meetings of political figures – especially the leaders of the two countries.

President Erdogan and Mitsotakis have met three times in the past year and Mitsotakis’ visit to Ankara will be the fourth one in this series of meetings.

Following a period of tension following the events of 2020, the thaw in bilateral relations gained momentum following the earthquakes in Kahramanmaras in February 2023.

The period of de-escalation facilitated a renewed engagement between the neighboring countries, characterized by gestures of mutual goodwill.

“Mitsotakis’ visit to Ankara is geared toward fostering a peaceful summer in the Aegean region and sustaining efforts for mutual benefit,” Ta Nea writes under the headline “Kazan-Kazan” (win-win in Turkish), elaborating on the agenda and objectives set for the upcoming meeting.

The dialogue extends beyond economic issues, with both leaders navigating a complex political landscape influenced by upcoming European Parliament elections, potentially heightening nationalist sentiments.

However, Mitsotakis has remained steadfast in his approach, advocating for sustained dialogue over conflict, especially in today’s global climate of uncertainty.

The talks in Ankara will also address broader regional and international issues, such as cooperation in combating irregular migration and terrorism.
