Russia’s Putin cautions Türkiye on seeking grants from Western institutions

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed concerns over Türkiye’s recent inclination toward receiving grants from Western financial institutions. While he acknowledges that this may not inherently be negative, he cautions that if it leads to restrictions on commercial and economic relations with Russia, Türkiye could face more losses than gains. “In my opinion, there is such a threat,” Putin stated.

Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, President Putin discussed the economic relations between Russia and Türkiye. He highlighted the growth in trade volume and bilateral relations.

‘Reliable partnership in nuclear energy’

Putin has highlighted the strong partnership in the nuclear energy sector, emphasizing the significant contribution of Turkish experts to the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) project. He mentioned that the Akkuyu NPP presents new opportunities for the Turkish economy and energy sector. Putin also commended President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for his strategic decision regarding the Akkuyu NPP, stating that it reduces dependence on hydrocarbon resources and strengthens the partnership between Russia and Türkiye in this critical area.

Attacks on gas pipelines

Putin commented on the planned natural gas hub in Türkiye, which aims to be an electronic platform for gas trading primarily targeting Europe. He highlighted the cooperation between Türkiye and Ukraine but also mentioned attempts by Ukraine to attack gas pipelines supplying Türkiye.

“This is not a joke or an exaggeration. Two drones were shot down by the Russian military’s electronic warfare systems. They fell near a gas pumping station on the Black Sea coast. Please inform our friend President Erdogan about the facts regarding this matter. There are also continuous attacks on ships protecting the shipment system under the Black Sea using unmanned sea vehicles,” Putin said.
