Imamoglu elected president of Union of Municipalities of Türkiye
Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu on Wednesday was elected as the president of the Union of Municipalities of Türkiye, receiving 515 votes.
Imamoglu, the candidate of the main opposition party, defeated Trabzon Mayor Ahmet Metin Genc, the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) candidate, who received 250 votes.
In the local elections of March 31, the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) had emerged as the leading party with 37% of the votes. The ruling AK Party followed closely with 35%, marking the first time since its foundation that the AK Party has ranked second.
