Turkish-Japanese University of Science and Technology will open in Istanbul this year, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan says after meeting with his Japanese counterpart Kamikawa Yoko

The Turkish-Japanese University of Science and Technology will become operational in Istanbul in 2024 as a symbol of cooperation between the two countries in the field of education, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Tuesday after a press conference with his Japanese counterpart Kamikawa Yoko.

“We are pleased that the Turkish-Japanese University of Science and Technology will be launched this year. This university, which will be a sign of our cooperation in the field of education, will also enable us to diversify our cooperation with Japan,” Fidan said.

In addition, he pointed out that the work on the Turkiye-Japan Energy Forum, which is planned to be organized for the first time this year, is ongoing, and stated that they would like to cooperate between the two countries in the field of energy as in many other fields.

With this, Yoko emphasized that Turkiye is one of the most important strategic partners of Japan and said that they agreed with Fidan to improve bilateral relations.

“The future of Japan-Turkiye relations is bright. Japan has reinforced my desire to deepen our cooperation with Turkiye in a wider range of areas,” Yoko said.

Turkiye and Japan have a longstanding history of diplomatic relations marked by mutual respect and cultural exchanges. While formal diplomatic ties were established in 1924, the historical connections between the two countries date back even further.

During the late Ottoman Empire period, Japan was admired by Turkish intellectuals and reformers as a model of successful modernization.

After World War II, both countries reconstructed and developed, finding common ground in their commitment to economic growth and stability. Over the years, cultural exchanges, diplomatic visits, and economic collaborations have deepened the ties between Turkiye and Japan.

Today, the historical backdrop serves as a foundation for the multifaceted relationship they share, encompassing not only diplomacy but also economic partnerships, educational initiatives and a mutual appreciation of each other’s rich cultural heritage.
