Nine people lost their lives and 30 others were injured in a traffic accident on Tuesday when an intercity passenger bus overturned in Aydincik district of Mersin.

The bus was on its way from Marmaris, one of Turkiye’s major holiday resorts, to Mardin in the southeastern region when it hit a barrier and overturned at the Sarıyar Tunnel exit of the D-400 highway in Yenikas neighborhood.

After the accident, many health and gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the scene. The injured were immediately taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Mersin Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan said in a written statement that the accident happened at 1.15 a.m. on the Mersin-Antalya highway, about 170 meters (558 feet) from the city center.

“A tragic traffic accident occurred when a passenger bus carrying 40 passengers and three crew members overturned on its way to Mersin,” Pehlivan said.
