U.S. National Security Advisor Sullivan rejects genocide label for Gaza killings, emphasizing Hamas defeat

The U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated on Monday that the Biden administration does not classify the killings of Palestinians in Gaza by Israel during its conflict with Hamas as genocide.

Sullivan emphasized that the U.S. aims to see Hamas defeated and expressed deep concern for the plight of Palestinians caught in the crossfire, describing their situation as “hellish.” He cautioned against a significant Israeli military operation in Rafah, deeming it a strategic error.

“We categorically reject the characterization of the events in Gaza as genocide. Our stance on this matter has been consistently clear,” Sullivan asserted during a press briefing at the White House.

He also expressed regret at reports that Israeli settlers attacked a humanitarian aid convoy en route to the Erez crossing in northern Gaza, the second such incident in less than a week.

Sullivan noted that Biden has sought to influence Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach to the conflict, but stressed that Israel, as a sovereign and democratic nation, ultimately determines its course of action. “The prime minister is not answerable to us. He is accountable to the Israeli populace,” Sullivan affirmed.

Echoing a statement made by Biden on Saturday, Sullivan indicated that a cease-fire in Gaza could be achieved if Hamas were to release hostages. He urged the international community to press Hamas to return to negotiations and accept a diplomatic resolution.

President Biden, who is seeking reelection this year, has come under scrutiny for his support for Israel amid growing criticism from supporters at home.

Some critics accuse Israel of genocide, while health officials in Gaza estimate that more than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed.
