President Erdogan addresses new legislation to combat violence in education
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announces plans for new legislation to combat violence in the education sector, following the tragic murder of school principal Ibrahim Oktugan in Istanbul
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded on Friday to the recent tragic murder of school principal Ibrahim Oktugan in Istanbul by announcing plans for new legislation aimed at combating violence in the education sector.
Erdogan’s statement, delivered via social media, emphasized the crucial role of teachers in the nation’s development efforts. He asserted, “It is our duty to protect our teachers from all kinds of negativity and to provide them with a comfortable and safe working environment.”
The proposed legislation, to be presented to the Grand National Assembly, includes significant measures. Penalties for acts against teachers will be increased by half under criminal laws.
Furthermore, the suspension of sentences for those committing these acts will be prevented. Acts of violence will be considered grounds for arrest, thus preventing non-custodial trials.
Additionally, teachers working in private institutions and other education workers will be considered public officials regarding crimes committed against them due to their duties.
Erdogan assured teachers, stating, “Our teachers should rest assured.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to swiftly implementing comprehensive regulations to address violence against teachers and other education workers.
“We have never been silent in the face of violence against teachers, who carry out such an important profession with sacrifice in every part of our country, and we will not remain silent,” Erdogan declared.
