G7 leaders stand firmly with Israel amid escalating tensions with Iran
The leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations condemn Iran’s attack on Israeli territory and reaffirm their commitment to Israel’s security as they call for additional sanctions against Iran
In a resolute display of solidarity, the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have pledged their unwavering support for Israel following a recent attack by Iran. Following a virtual summit, G7 leaders issued a statement condemning Iran’s direct assault on Israeli territory and reaffirming their commitment to Israel’s security.
“We unequivocally condemn in the strongest terms Iran’s direct and unprecedented attack against Israel,” stated the G7 leaders in the joint statement published by the Italian G7 presidency.
Expressing grave concern over the potential for further destabilization in the already volatile region, the leaders called for an immediate cessation of hostilities by Iran and its proxies. “With its actions, Iran has further stepped toward the destabilisation of the region and risks provoking an uncontrollable regional escalation. This must be avoided,” the statement read.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen echoed the sentiment, indicating that additional sanctions against Iran, particularly targeting its drone and missile programs, are under consideration in coordination with international partners. “Going forward we will reflect on additional sanctions against Iran in close cooperation with our partners,” she affirmed.
The recent escalation traces back to Iran’s retaliatory strike, marking its first direct assault on Israeli territory, in response to an airstrike in Syria’s capital that destroyed its consular building earlier this month, a strike widely attributed to Israel.
In addition to expressing solidarity with Israel, the G7 announced intensified efforts to address the crisis in Gaza, aiming for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire. “We will also strengthen our cooperation to end the crisis in Gaza, including by continuing to work towards an immediate and sustainable ceasefire and the release of hostages by Hamas, and deliver increased humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in need,” the leaders affirmed.
The Israel-Hamas conflict, which erupted with a significant attack by Hamas on Oct. 7, has exacted a heavy toll on both sides. According to Israeli figures cited by the media, the conflict has resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people, predominantly civilians. Meanwhile, Gaza has borne the brunt of Israel’s retaliatory measures, with at least 33,729 deaths reported, primarily among women and children, according to Gaza’s Hamas-run health ministry.
