France’s prime minister, Gabriel Attal, warns against complacency in the face of global threats to abortion rights.

Before a vote to entrench the right to an abortion in the constitution, France’s prime minister, Gabriel Attal, said on Monday that the right to an abortion was still “in danger” and “at the mercy of decision makers”.

Speaking directly to women within France and beyond its borders, Attal heralded the dawn of a new era marked by hope and progress. Yet, amidst this optimism, he issued a stark warning, cautioning against complacency in the face of mounting threats to abortion rights globally.

He addressed parliamentarians assembled in an unusual legislative congress in Versailles, saying, “I am telling women, within our borders and beyond: The era of a world of hope is starting,” while also cautioning them that the right to an abortion is under danger elsewhere, especially in Hungary, Poland, and the United States.
