Azerbaijan’s presidential election sees incumbent President Ilham Aliyev win an overwhelming victory with 92.1% of the votes
Azerbaijan concluded its presidential election in a contest with seven candidates on Tuesday. According to exit polls, incoming president Ilham Aliyev won an overwhelming victory with 92.1% of the votes.
Azerbaijanis voted on Wednesday, choosing the president to govern the country for the next seven years, with incumbent President Ilham Aliyev among 7 candidates competing for this position.
Polling stations opened early Wednesday for the presidential election, with 6,500 stations set up nationwide and abroad. Over 800 international observers representing different global bodies and countries and 90,653 local monitors supervised this process. Around 200 foreign journalists also joined local media in covering the election, which concluded at 19:00 local time.
The polls show that incumbent President Ilham Aliyev got 92.1% of the votes, with independent candidate Zahid Oruc obtaining only 1.8%.
