Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan expresses concerns about the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran, warning of potential regional escalation if not handled carefully

In an interview on Sunday, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, emphasizing the need to avoid regional escalation. Fidan acknowledged the precarious situation, warning of the potential for a more significant outbreak if not handled with care.

Addressing the US retaliation on Iran-backed groups, Fidan underscored the risks involved. “Playing with fire can lead to unforeseeable consequences. Once you play with fire, it may turn into a full-blown conflagration beyond control. We are facing a threat here, where uncontrollability is at stake.”

He also highlighted ongoing diplomatic efforts, underlining the ongoing dialogues with regional partners and the United States. Fidan stressed the importance of preventing the regional tensions from spreading.  “The situation is unfavorable. We might find ourselves confronted with an even larger escalation.”

Regarding Israel’s security concerns, Fidan emphasized that the international community constantly focuses on the issue. He asserted that when Israel refrains from misleading the global public, it will find security. Contrary to common perceptions, Fidan remarked, “Israel is not pursuing security; it seeks more territory. The day Israel grants statehood to the Palestinians, it will genuinely feel secure.”

Fidan reiterated the readiness of regional countries to assume responsibility, recalling their commitment to a two-state solution with a unique emphasis on a guarantor mechanism. “When we proposed a two-state solution, our emphasis on the guarantor mechanism was a methodological difference this time around.”
