The panel held at Tarsus University discussed the potential use of artificial intelligence in the defense industry and global investments

Tarsus University in Mersin hosted the 32nd Signal Processing and Communication Applications Congress, featuring a panel on “The Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Defense Industry.”

Ahmet Bahadir Bulbul, head of the Cyber Security Information Systems Department at the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), highlighted AI’s growing role in sectors like health care, finance, agriculture, transportation, and telecommunications.

Bulbul highlighted the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, saying, “We are really struggling to keep up with these developments. On the other hand, we need to adapt to these advancements, develop, and use these technologies. These developments showcase the potential of artificial intelligence in critical systems, such as the defense sector. With this reality in mind, countries that have emerged in the defense field in recent years are investing significant resources in artificial intelligence technology to strengthen their positions.”

Bulbul pointed out the increasing global investments in AI, stating, “The US is leading in investment in this field. It has invested three times more than its closest competitor, China. The United Kingdom follows China in terms of investment. When we look at investments in artificial intelligence, our country ranks 20th. The number of trained personnel and AI-based undergraduate and graduate programs in the country is growing on a daily basis. As the Presidency of Defense Industries, we prioritize the development of artificial intelligence and the transfer of knowledge gained in the civilian sector to the defense industry.”

Following his speech, Bulbul moderated a panel featuring Director of Electronics and Software Design at Aselsan Fatih Say, Group Manager of Open Source Code Transformation at Havelsan Ozgur Umut Vurgun, Director of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence at Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) Emre Akyilmaz, Decision Support Systems Director at STM Defense Technologies Engineering and Trade Ahmet Sezer and General Manager of DataBoss Technology professor Suleyman Serdar Kozat.

The panel provided insights into the use of AI in the defense industry, showcasing examples of its impact on the sector. Tarsus University rector professor Orhan Aydin also attended the event.
