ChatGPT’s OpenAI working on releasing platform similar to X

OpenAI, known for leading the AI chatbot race with ChatGPT, is reportedly developing a new social media platform that could directly compete with X (formerly Twitter) and Meta (Facebook and Instagram).
It’s still unclear whether this platform will be a standalone app or a new feature within the ChatGPT app. However, the concept seems to focus on enabling users to generate and share AI-enhanced content—rather than just consume it—creating a new kind of interactive, AI-driven social experience.
According to The Verge, the company has an early prototype in testing that revolves around a social feed powered by ChatGPT’s image generation tools. CEO Sam Altman is said to be showing the prototype to select individuals outside the company for feedback.
If launched, this project could intensify Altman’s rivalry with Elon Musk and bring OpenAI into closer competition with Meta, which is also developing a social feed for its AI assistant.
Creating viral content via AI
Beyond strategic competition, the platform could offer OpenAI access to real-time user content—critical data for training AI models. Currently, Meta trains its models using data from Facebook and Instagram, while Musk’s Grok pulls content directly from X. OpenAI creating its own feed could reduce its reliance on these competitors’ platforms.
Sources also suggest that part of the goal is to help users create more engaging or viral content using AI—something that has made other AI labs envious of Grok’s integration with X.
Still, it’s unclear if the project will ever fully launch. OpenAI is already navigating the rapid growth of ChatGPT, regulatory scrutiny, and fierce industry competition. Whether users are ready for yet another social feed remains to be seen.
