Cello kings of metal Apocalyptica head back to Türkiye

Finnish symphonic metal band Apocalyptica, founded in Helsinki in 1993, is set to reunite with fans in Türkiye this summer. Known for their powerful renditions of Metallica classics, the group will perform in Ankara on August 21 at the Middle East Technical University (METU) Alumni Association Visnelik Facility and in Istanbul on August 22 at Kucukciftlik Park as part of their “Plays Metallica Vol. 2” world tour.
Tickets for both concerts went on sale today via Bubilet and are expected to sell fast, as the band enjoys a strong fan base in Türkiye.
A message to Turkish fans
Sharing the concert poster on their social media platforms, Apocalyptica addressed their Turkish audience directly: “You asked us to come back—and we will.”
Classically trained musicians turn metal trailblazers
Three classically trained cellists — Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lotjonen, and Perttu Kivilaakso — all graduates of the renowned Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, founded Apocalyptica. Over time, the band expanded to include drummer Mikko Siren and vocalist Franky Perez, carving out a unique space in the metal world with their fusion of classical and heavy metal elements.
Initially performing instrumental covers of Metallica songs using only cellos, the group went on to develop their own neoclassical metal style. Their distinctive sound has won them global acclaim, with over four million albums sold worldwide.
Collaboration with Turkish rock icon
Apocalyptica has previously collaborated with Turkish rock star Sebnem Ferah, performing on two versions of her hit song Perdeler—one in its original form, the other reimagined in Apocalyptica’s signature style, featured on Ferah’s album.
Line-up changes over years
While the band’s core remains strong, some changes have occurred over the years. Perttu Kivilaakso, a metal-loving cellist from the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, replaced Antero Manninen, while original member Max Lilja eventually parted ways with the group.
Apocalyptica remains one of the most innovative forces in metal, continuously pushing the boundaries of genre and instrumentation. Their interpretations of Metallica’s legendary tracks offer a fresh, orchestral take on heavy metal, earning them a reputation as musical alchemists who blur the lines between rock, metal, and classical music.
