Selimiye Mosque’s ‘minbar’ inspires stunning jewelry collection

Ottoman imperial mosque Selimiye Mosque’s minbar inspired a stunning jewelry collection designed by Trakya University lecturer Aybike Kinali.

The collection showcased traditional techniques alongside modern interpretations at the 4th Edirne Research Symposium exhibition.

Kinali, who designed earrings, brooches, and necklaces made of 925 sterling silver using classical jewelry techniques, presented her “Selimiye Mosque Pulpit Set” design to the taste of art lovers at the exhibition slated to take place in Edirne.

The exhibition, which was opened in the foyer of the Balkan Congress Center, included Kinali’s works and the works of the faculty members and students of the Jewelry and Jewelry Design Program – reflecting the elements of Edirne city identity.

In a statement to journalists, Kinali said that the pulpit in Selimiye Mosque is known as the most beautiful of the Ottoman mosque pulpits.

Highlighting the minbar’s wonderful motifs, Kinali said: “I have a set of works based on the minbar patterns of Selimiye Mosque. I transferred the motifs in the minbar pattern to three dimensions, combined them with metal, and turned them into jewelry. We use traditional jewelry techniques and new technologies in our works. We created our designs inspired by the culture and history of our geography.”

Kinali stated that the motifs in different structures of Selimiye also inspired the students’ designs.

Lecturer Nurcan Abaci Ar stated that the exhibition includes works designed by 32 artists with traditional and contemporary techniques and that motifs specific to Edirne are predominantly used.

The exhibition is open for visitors for two days
