Türkiye faces intense dust storm: Meteorologists issue urgent warning

A massive dust storm originating from West Africa is expected to affect Türkiye throughout the week, bringing rising temperatures and potential health risks. Experts are urging residents, especially those with respiratory conditions, to wear masks as air quality deteriorates.

Dust clouds blanket Türkiye

According to the Turkish State Meteorological Service, desert dust from Mali has spread across a significant portion of Türkiye. In regions expecting rainfall, this phenomenon could lead to ‘mud rain,’ leaving a visible layer of dirt on vehicles and surfaces.

NTV Meteorology Editor Dilek Caliskan stated, “The warm air currently affecting the country originates from the desert. The strong southerly winds, or lodos, are carrying a dense layer of dust, which can be clearly seen on cars. Meanwhile, temperatures have exceeded 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) in many areas.”

Health alert: Respiratory risks on rise

Professor Muhammed Emin Akkoyu warned that desert dust can be harmful to lung health, increasing the risk of respiratory infections.

“For individuals with asthma and other respiratory conditions, exposure to this dust can trigger allergic reactions and airway constriction. Those suffering from COPD face an increased risk of severe attacks,” Akkoyu cautioned. He strongly advised the use of masks when stepping outside to minimize health risks.

When will dust storm subside?

Meteorologists predict that the impact of desert dust over Türkiye will continue until Friday. Until then, residents are encouraged to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from potential health hazards.
