Trump should be convinced to withdraw US troops from Syria: FM Fidan

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Thursday called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria, suggesting it would be a cost-effective decision for Washington.
Fidan noted that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and U.S. President Donald Trump had a “highly positive” conversation, during which Trump’s respect for Erdogan was evident. Fidan made these remarks during an iftar event with journalists.
Ankara remains cautious about the agreement signed by Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and Ferhat Abdi Sahin, Fidan said, stressing that Türkiye would closely monitor the process in the short term.
Fidan emphasized the need to grant Syria’s Kurds the rights denied under the Assad regime, including citizenship, cultural, and political rights, ensuring equality.
Prioritizing removal of Israel from Syrian territory
He also urged Syria to prioritize the removal of Israel from Syrian territory and to manage the process with international cooperation.
Additionally, Fidan announced that five countries met in Jordan to establish a center for joint operations and intelligence against Daesh, with technical teams currently working on its setup.
Looking ahead, Fidan said Türkiye could contribute to a peacekeeping force in Ukraine, “if parties agree to establish” it, as part of efforts to settle the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Fidan also emphasized the importance of visa liberalization with Europe, noting that the current system cannot meet Türkiye’s growing demand while restrictions remain in place.
