Known for its stunning blue water and white sand beaches, Lake Salda in southwestern Türkiye’s Burdur province is often referred to as the “Maldives of Türkiye.” It has become a popular tourist destination, but this influx of visitors raises concerns about the preservation of this natural wonder.

Volcanic hills and dense pine forests encircle the lake, creating a scene that varies in color throughout the year. The serenity of the lakes produces a mirror-like reflection of the sky, which makes it a photographer’s paradise.

Lake Salda’s mineral-rich sediments, particularly its magnesium-rich white sands, have drawn significant scientific interest because of their striking similarity to Martian soil. NASA has studied the lake to better understand the Jezero Crater on Mars, where the Perseverance rover landed in 2021. Research on Earth helps scientists comprehend similar geological processes that may have occurred on Mars, shedding light on the planet’s past.

Conservation measures needed

In 2019, while studying Lake Salda, Briony Horgan, a professor at Purdue University, was astonished by its resemblance to the distant Martian landscape. “It’s really just an incredibly unique place,” she told CNN Travel. “In many ways, it actually felt like standing on the shores of ancient Lake Jezero on Mars.”

NASA’s Lake Salda investigations also involved Nurgul Balci, a professor in the Geological Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University. She claims that the lake provides information on the history of our planet in addition to helping scientists understand Martian geology. She gave an example of how the water’s microbes have constructed microbial structures that are at least two million years old, some of which have become visible as the lake’s water levels have dropped.

‘’Salda contains a lot of information that can help us understand life that started and evolved 3.5 billion years ago,’’ says Balci. ‘’We prepared a file that, Salda, contains important information about Mars and the early Earth, and if they are lost, we will have difficulty finding and understanding such information,’’ she also explained.

Besides, they warned that increasing human activity near Salda is endangering its fragile ecosystem.
