Pakistan’s Election Commission announces PTI as the leading Party while it is uncertain about who will be the next prime minister

Candidates, mostly linked to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), won the most seats as the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) announced results Sunday.

The independents got 101 seats, followed by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) winning 75, while Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s Pakistan People’s Party managed to grab 55 seats.

Election in two constituencies will be held later because of the death of one candidate and incomplete polling on Feb.8.

It is uncertain who will be chosen as the nation’s next prime minister as none of the three major parties will secure the 169 seats required to establish a majority in parliament and form a government on their own.

In Thursday’s fiercely contested election, which was tainted by violence and the subject of accusations of poll tampering, the results were declared more than three days after the polls closed.
