Turkish police launched a large-scale operation against Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and his close circle. Detention orders were issued for Imamoglu and 99 others on Wednesday.

Servet Yildirim, the general manager of the economy-focused channel CNBC-e, was also among those detained.

As part of the probe, arrest warrants were issued for Ilbak Holding Chairman Murat Ilbak, as well as Mustafa Ilbak, Yusuf Ilbak and Ali Ilbak from the İlbak family. Ilbak Holding owns CNBC-e, which resumed broadcasting on June 10, 2024.

Reports indicate the investigation stems from corruption allegations and a Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) report following widely circulated footage of money counting.

Police also searched Imamoglu’s residence, detaining his advisor Murat Ongun, campaign director Necati Sahin, and Deputy Secretary-General Mahir Polat.

Additionally, in a separate “urban reconciliation” probe, Imamoglu and seven others were detained on charges of “aiding the PKK/KCK terrorist organization.”
