Al-Shabab attack kills 3 Emirati troops, Bahraini officer in Somalia

Three Emirati troops and a Bahraini military commander on a training assignment were killed in an attack at a military installation in the capital of Somalia, which was claimed by the extremist organization al-Shabab – an al-Qaida-linked terrorist group, authorities announced Sunday.

The attack that took place on Saturday targeted the troops at the General Gordon Military Base in Mogadishu, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Somalian President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud expressed his condolences to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the death of its forces, however, there were still few details available regarding the incident.

The Bahraini commander and three of the UAE’s troops were killed in a “terrorist act,” according to a report released early on Sunday by the state-run WAM news agency.

No other details were provided. The attack injured two people, the report added.

Senior Emirati ambassador Anwar Gargash conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased, wishing a speedy recovery for those injured.

“No treacherous act will prevent us from continuing the message of security and safety and combating extremism and terrorism in all its forms,” Gargash wrote on X.

Later, in a statement released on social media, the military of Bahrain, an island country in the Persian Gulf off the coast of Saudi Arabia, confirmed the officer’s death.

Al-Shabab took responsibility for the incident in an online statement, claiming that several members of the Emirati military were killed.
