FM Fidan names 3 diplomats for deputy FM role

Ayse Berris Ekinci, Nuh Yilmaz and Burhanettin Duran appointed as deputy foreign ministers following former Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Yildiz’s appointment as U.N. ambassador

Ayse Berris Ekinci, Nuh Yilmaz and Burhanettin Duran have been appointed as deputy foreign ministers, as per an announcement in the Official Gazette. The appointments, signed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, mark their roles within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Duran, who has written numerous Turkish and English articles on Turkish intellectual history, Turkish foreign policy, Islamism, Europe, democracy, and civil society in many books and journals, currently serves as the general coordinator of the major think tank SETA.

Ekinci’s significant milestone in her diplomatic career was her tenure as ambassador to Havana, Cuba, from Nov. 30, 2016, to April 1, 2021. During this period, she took an active stance against the U.S. embargoes on Cuba.

Yilmaz has served as a correspondent for Star newspaper, Sabah newspaper and CNN Turk in Washington. From 2008 to 2011, he was the founding director of SETA’s Washington D.C. Office. He has worked as a lecturer at Marmara University’s Faculty of Communication. He has published articles in various domestic and international journals and newspapers on foreign policy, strategy, critical thinking and cultural studies. 

The decision comes after former Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Yildiz’s appointment as Turkish ambassador to the U.N. in New York.
