A state of emergency and a 60-day curfew was declared in Ecuador after one of the country’s most dangerous gang leaders escaped from prison

A state of emergency and a 60-day curfew have been declared in the country after the escape of Jose Adolfo Macias Villamar, the leader of “Los Choneros,” one of Ecuador’s major gangs.

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa addressed the escape of Jose Adolfo Macias Villamar, known as “Fito,” the leader of “Los Choneros,” one of the country’s largest and most dangerous gangs, through a statement on his social media account.

Noboa stated that a state of emergency and a 60-day curfew had been announced after Villamar’s escape.

Emphasizing that the decision will allow the army to locate the fugitive ringleader and ensure internal security in prisons where riots broke out, Noboa said, “I have just signed the emergency decree so that the army has all political and legal support in its actions.”

It was reported that Villamar escaped from the prison in Guayaquil on Jan. 7.

Macias was sentenced to 34 years in prison in 2011 for various crimes, including murder and drug trafficking.
