Controversy continues over Macron’s revamp plans for famous Notre Dame

French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed to replace the stained glass windows made in 1859 by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc,with contemporary designs

President Macron recently proposed replacing the iconic tower of Notre Dame Cathedral, designed by Viollet-le-Duc, with a modern version to symbolize the cathedral’s resilience.

The French president’s revamp plans come on the heels of the fire incident that apparently did not destroy the stained glass windows made in 1859 by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.

However, the idea was immediately rejected and drew immense backlash from people.

Over 125,000 people have signed a petition against the change proposed by French President Emmanuel Macron, which they believe would destroy the “architectural integrity” of the landmark building.

“President Macron has no right to change this building that belongs to everyone and Emmanuel Macron wants to give Notre Dame the stamp of the 21st century,” the petition read.

The cathedral is in the process of being rebuilt after the fire incident and is scheduled to reopen on Dec. 8, 2024.

However, some groups believe that the replacement of the north tower windows would “enrich the cathedral” and make a “great symbolic” contribution to the cathedral.

In the restoration project, they replaced the tower with a design identical to the original.
