New road safety regulations in Türkiye: Alcohol locks, data recorders

New regulations have been introduced in Türkiye to enhance road safety. These include mandatory alcohol locks, event data recorders, and driver distraction warning systems. The goal is to prevent intoxicated individuals from driving and to improve overall road safety.
Alcohol locks
The alcohol lock system, which was previously approved but lacked technical specifications, is now set to be mandatory in certain vehicles. It works by measuring the driver’s blood alcohol content (BAC) through a breath test. If the BAC exceeds the legal limit, the vehicle will not start.
How it works
The alcohol lock is connected to the vehicle’s ignition system. The driver must blow into the device before starting the engine. If alcohol is detected, the vehicle remains disabled. Some advanced versions of the system can also monitor alcohol levels while the vehicle is in motion, ensuring the driver remains sober during the trip.
Concerns
Although the alcohol lock system is expected to reduce drunk driving incidents, there are concerns about potential manipulation. In Europe, alcohol locks are used in commercial vehicles, but a sober person could blow into the device, allowing an intoxicated driver to start the vehicle. This raises concerns about the system’s reliability and potential loopholes.
Why it matters?
These new regulations aim to reduce accidents caused by drunk driving, particularly among individuals who might otherwise attempt to drive while intoxicated. However, the possibility of the system being manipulated highlights challenges in ensuring its full effectiveness.
