Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of preparing to reject a U.S.-proposed 30-day cease-fire following recent talks in Saudi Arabia.

While Moscow acknowledged the proposal, Putin suggested any cease-fire must lead to a long-term resolution and address the root causes of the conflict.

Details

  • U.S. and Ukrainian officials met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Tuesday to discuss peace prospects.
  • After the meeting, Ukraine expressed willingness to accept a 30-day cease-fire.
  • Putin responded by saying Russia supports ending hostilities but only under conditions that guarantee long-term peace.

  • Zelenskyy accused Putin of manipulation, claiming he avoids outright rejection but obstructs meaningful progress.
  • He suggested Putin fears telling former U.S. President Donald Trump, a key political figure, that he wants the war to continue.
  • Ukraine reiterated its commitment to constructive dialogue but insists that Russia is the primary obstacle.

Background

Previous attempts at ceasefires or peace talks have failed because of disagreements on territorial integrity and security guarantees.

Russia insists that Ukraine and its Western allies must address Moscow’s security concerns before any lasting peace can be reached.

The war has significantly escalated in recent months, with both sides preparing for continued offensives.
