US WasteFuel enters Turkish market in partnership to develop large biorefinery

U.S.-based bioenergy firm WasteFuel has partnered with Turkish integrated waste management company ITC to initiate the preliminary engineering and design process for a green methanol biorefinery in Ankara, Türkiye.
According to a press release from WasteFuel published on Monday, the biorefinery is projected to expand ITC’s existing integrated waste management facility, which already receives over 1.8 million metric tons of municipal waste annually.
“We are proud to join the Ankara municipality and WasteFuel in celebrating this milestone,” Yavuz Kantur, General Manager of ITC, said regarding the agreement, emphasizing the company’s long-standing commitment to developing innovative municipal waste treatment solutions that benefit the communities they serve.

‘Aiming to make Türkiye a marine fuel supply hub’
David Trench, CEO of WasteFuel, highlighted the partnership with ITC in Ankara as a significant step in expanding the company’s global portfolio of green fuel projects. “Green methanol will be crucial for the near-term decarbonization of the shipping industry, and this project will help meet this growing global demand,” he added.
The company stated that a final investment decision is anticipated in early 2026, projecting that if approved, the project would position Türkiye as a key hub for sustainable marine fuel supply at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
Established in 2002, ITC operates 14 facilities across 11 provinces in Türkiye, processing 22% of the country’s total waste.
