Constructive approach must be accepted at Cyprus talks in Geneva: Turkish Cyprus

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar has emphasized that the international community must adopt a constructive approach toward the Cyprus issue at the upcoming informal talks in Geneva.
Speaking ahead of his meeting with Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz at the Presidential Complex, Tatar stated that the TRNC will convey its stance clearly at the conference, underscoring the need for the removal of international embargoes on Turkish Cypriots.
‘Cypriot Turks have no patience left for isolation’
Tatar highlighted that the Turkish Cyprus has long faced international restrictions and that the patience of Turkish Cypriots is wearing thin.
“We will sincerely express in Geneva that the people of the TRNC, who have been subjected to various injustices under embargoes, can no longer endure these restrictions and that international isolation must end,” Tatar said.
He also noted that Cyprus consists of two sovereign peoples—Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots—yet only one side has been internationally recognized as a state. Referring to the Republic of Cyprus’s European Union accession after the Annan Plan referendum, Tatar stated that the TRNC has been left in a disadvantaged position.

A two-state solution for a stable future
Tatar reiterated that a permanent settlement in Cyprus can only be achieved through cooperation between two equal states.
He argued that the TRNC’s status should be acknowledged internationally, and that economic and political integration should proceed accordingly.
“In Geneva, we will make it clear that peace, stability, and prosperity in Cyprus are only possible through mutual cooperation between two sovereign states,” Tatar said.
The TRNC president also pointed out that there are numerous opportunities for collaboration in fields such as tourism, energy, and infrastructure. He called on the international community to acknowledge the TRNC’s constructive efforts in seeking a long-term solution.

Türkiye’s role in Geneva as a balancing factor
Tatar emphasized that Türkiye’s presence at the negotiation table in Geneva will play a crucial role in maintaining balance during discussions.
“With Türkiye’s support, the TRNC has made significant progress in sectors like energy, infrastructure, agriculture, and tourism. We anticipate further economic growth and a higher standard of living for our people,” he said.
Tatar also highlighted Türkiye’s global influence, particularly in defense and diplomacy, and stated that the TRNC benefits from its strategic partnership with Ankara.

Support for TRNC’s economic growth
During their meeting, Vice President Yilmaz reiterated Türkiye’s continued support for the TRNC, emphasizing that the recognition of the Turkish Cypriots’ sovereign equality is key to a sustainable resolution.
“A solution in Cyprus must be based on the equal status and inherent rights of the Turkish Cypriots,” Yilmaz stated.
He also stressed the importance of regional stability, arguing that the two neighboring states on the island should coexist peacefully and contribute to regional prosperity.
