Artists support South Africa’s genocide case against Israel
Several celebrities, including Charles Dance and Susan Sarandon, are supporting South Africa’s genocide lawsuit against Israel for its attacks on Gaza at the International Court of Justice
More than 20 artists, including Susan Sarandon, Cynthia Nixon, “The Crown” actors Khalid Abdalla and Tobias Menzies, and “Game of Thrones” actors Charles Dance, Carice van Houten and Lena Headey, expressed their support by reading excerpts from South Africa’s 84-page submission to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague in its genocide case against Israel for its attacks on Gaza.
The video series was shared by the Palestine Literature Festival, a U.K.-based cultural organization.
South Africa argues that Israel’s attacks on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023 violate the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide. Accordingly, if a state violates the articles of the convention, states party to the convention can sue.
South Africa has requested nine injunctions against Israel, demanding that Israel halt military operations, take measures to prevent genocide, provide access to humanitarian aid and punish those involved in genocide.
