Venice to charge day-trippers to control tourist congestion
To regulate the rising number of day-trippers to Venice, Italy, a digital portal has been introduced that allows tourists to conveniently pay the entrance fee required for visiting the city
According to reports in the Italian press, Venice has introduced a digital internet portal that enables day-trippers to pre-pay the 5 euros ($6) entrance fee. This portal also allows visitors to make reservations for specific time slots, especially during peak periods like holidays when an increase in tourist crowds is anticipated.
Tourists planning to visit the city during the spring and summer this year will have to pay the entrance fee and make a reservation on the website “Contributo di Accesso a Venezia” (Venice Entrance Fee) if their visit falls on one of the 29 days designated by the municipality as “peak days.”
In response to the Venice City Council’s decision in September 2023 to introduce an entrance fee for day-trippers as a measure to manage tourist density, a digital portal has been launched. This portal will send a QR code to the smartphones of day-trippers, which they will be required to present during random checks within the city.
Those who do not pay the entrance fee will have to pay an administrative fine of between 50 euros and 300 euros in addition to the entrance fee if they are detected during checks by local authorities.
