A surprising discovery occurred in the Ergani district of Diyarbakir, Türkiye, when an ancient mosaic layer was found during a grave excavation. The excavation, which took place in the Ozbilek neighborhood, was being conducted using a mechanical digger for a recently deceased local resident.

As the mechanical digger continued its work, workers came across what appeared to be a mosaic layer. Concerned about the find, the workers immediately halted the excavation and reported the discovery to local authorities.

Historical significance of discovery

Hasan Akdogan, the head of the Ozbilek neighborhood, shared that such small stones had been found in the area before. He recalled that residents would collect these stones and play a traditional game with them. However, the mosaic layer uncovered during the recent excavation was a much larger and more complete find.

Akdogan explained that for over 30 years, small stones had been discovered in the region, but this was the first time such a large and significant mosaic layer had appeared.

Following the discovery, local law enforcement, including the gendarmerie, were notified, and they informed the museum authorities. The authorities will conduct a thorough examination of the site. Akdogan further emphasized that the grave excavation was happening in the same area where the mosaic was found, although the digger operator only realized the significance of the discovery at the last moment.

Unfortunately, the operator had already caused some damage to the site before stopping the work.
