Artifacts found in Bronze Age tombs in Central Europe

Bronze artifacts found in graves unearthed at Papowo Biskupie in Poland are linked to the cult of the dead

Excavations at the Papowo Biskupie archaeological site, located on the bed of a dried-up lake in northern Poland, have revealed numerous graves containing over 550 bronze artifacts.The bronze artifacts discovered in the graves were intentionally placed there for ritual purposes, providing evidence of a burial tradition practiced during the Bronze Age.

The graves unearthed in the excavation, detailed in the journal Antiquity, are believed to be associated with Bronze Age ancestors of the Chelmno community. These individuals likely resided in the northern region of the country between 1200 and 450 B.C.

“Radiocarbon dating indicates that the placement of human remains in the lake preceded the deposition of metal, raising the possibility that the Chelmno community initially buried their dead in the lakes before moving on to the deposition of metal offerings,” the study said in relation to the jewelry, most of which was worn on the neck or arms.
