Rangers FC supporter dies in Istanbul traffic accident as club mourns

Rangers Football Club has issued a statement announcing the death of one of its supporters in a traffic accident in Istanbul, where fans had gathered for the team’s Europa League match against Fenerbace.
“We are devastated to have learned of the passing of one of our supporters in a road traffic accident overnight in Istanbul,” the Scottish club stated on their official social media channels Thursday.
A Scottish citizen identified as Christopher Potter, a Glasgow Rangers supporter, was killed after being struck by two consecutive vehicles while attempting to cross the road in Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district. The accident was captured on camera, and the two drivers involved have been detained and referred to judicial authorities.
The incident occurred around 4:30 AM in the Sinanpasa neighborhood of Besiktas. Potter had traveled to Istanbul to watch the Fenerbahçe-Rangers match scheduled for .

According to reports, Potter had met a woman at an entertainment venue earlier that night and took a commercial taxi with her to drop her off at a hotel. During the journey, Potter asked the taxi to stop so he could withdraw money from an ATM across the street.
While returning after withdrawing money, Potter stepped onto the road when the pedestrian light was red. He was first struck by a vehicle driven by a person identified as U.C., followed by another vehicle controlled by H.G.
Potter died at the scene of the accident. Both drivers were apprehended immediately at the location. Following their processing at the police station, the drivers were referred to judicial authorities.
In the somber announcement, Rangers Football Club emphasized their focus on the victim’s loved ones during this difficult period. “The immediate thoughts of everyone at the club are with their family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
The club also confirmed they are actively working with officials from both countries regarding the incident. “We are remaining in constant contact with both the Turkish and British authorities over this tragic incident,” the statement concluded.
