Turkish MP appointed as special representative of Parliamentary Assembly of Mediterranean for Syria

Atay Uslu, a member of the Turkish Parliament from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), has been appointed as the Special Representative for Syria by the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (PAM).
Uslu’s new role will focus on facilitating diplomatic relations and supporting Syria’s reconstruction and democratic transition.
Turkish MP Uslu’s appointment and role
Uslu, who represents Antalya in the Turkish Parliament, confirmed his appointment with the media.
He highlighted that the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly, founded in 2005, comprises 33 member states and 135 parliamentarians, aiming to foster regional cooperation and address challenges in the Mediterranean, Europe and the Gulf region.
During the 19th General Assembly of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly in Rome, Uslu officially received his appointment as Special Representative and Ambassador for Syria.

Mission, responsibilities
As the Special Representative for Syria, Uslu’s responsibilities include:
- Strengthening diplomatic ties between PAM and Syria.
- Supporting the drafting of a new Syrian constitution and the democratic transition process.
- Coordinating humanitarian and developmental aid.
- Facilitating the voluntary and safe return of Syrian refugees.
Uslu emphasized that his appointment reflects international confidence in Türkiye’s diplomatic leadership under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
He noted Türkiye plays a key role in the Middle East, Europe, and global humanitarian efforts.

PAM’s commitment to Syria
PAM Secretary-General Sergio Piazzi issued an official letter confirming Uslu’s appointment. The letter outlined the Assembly’s priorities for Syria, including:
- Advising on democratic transition and state institution rebuilding.
- Enhancing security and territorial integrity.
- Ensuring human rights protections, particularly for minorities.
- Assisting in economic recovery and reintegration of displaced Syrians.
The Assembly has pledged full support and resources to facilitate Uslu’s work in Syria.

Türkiye’s diplomatic leadership recognized
Uslu underscored Türkiye’s leading role in international humanitarian and diplomatic efforts, stating: “Türkiye’s diplomatic leadership is widely recognized, and this appointment is a testament to the trust placed in our country and foreign policy.”
Uslu will collaborate with international stakeholders, including the United Nations, to align efforts for Syria’s stabilization.
He confirmed plans to engage with Syrian officials and ensure parliamentary diplomacy contributes to peacebuilding efforts.
