Meteorologists have issued warnings about dust transport affecting southeastern Türkiye, with temperatures climbing above seasonal averages.

The dust carried from Syria is expected to lower air quality in several regions. Strong winds and avalanche risks remain concerns in certain areas.

Dust transport from Syria will reduce air quality in southeastern Türkiye

The Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM) has warned that dust transport from Syria will affect southeastern provinces, especially in the eastern Mediterranean and southeastern Anatolia regions.

Cities such as Adana, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, and Gaziantep will experience poor air quality due to the dust, which is expected to linger until Thursday.

Meteorology expert Abdullah Macit stated that while the dust will not mix with rain, it will lower air quality. “Those with chronic illnesses should take precautions,” he said, advising people with respiratory conditions to stay indoors as much as possible.

CNN TURK Meteorology Consultant Prof. Dr. Orhan Sen cautioned that the dust, traveling at low altitudes, may carry fungi and bacteria. “Inhaling these particles could cause respiratory problems,” he warned. He recommended wearing masks when outdoors and keeping windows closed for the next two to three days to limit exposure.

Strong winds in multiple regions and avalanche risks in eastern Türkiye

In addition to the dust transport, meteorologists have warned of strong winds across different parts of the country.

Northern winds in the Canakkale region are expected to reach 30 to 50 kilometers per hour (18 to 31 miles per hour), while storms in the eastern Mediterranean could reach speeds of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour (25 to 37 miles per hour). Residents have been urged to prepare for possible disruptions caused by high winds.

Authorities have also issued warnings about avalanche risks in high-altitude areas of eastern Anatolia and the inner parts of the eastern Black Sea region. These areas have accumulated heavy snowfall in recent weeks, increasing the likelihood of avalanches in steep, snow-covered locations.

Temperatures rising above seasonal averages as spring weather arrives

Warmer weather is settling across Türkiye, with temperatures expected to be 4 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit (2 to 4 degrees Celsius) above normal for this time of year. Major cities will see noticeable increases in daily highs.

  • Istanbul: High of 52 degrees Fahrenheit (11 degrees Celsius), low of 37 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius)
  • Ankara: High of 59 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius), low of 28 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 2 degrees Celsius)
  • Izmir: High of 64 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius), low of 43 degrees Fahrenheit (6 degrees Celsius)

While the dust and strong winds may cause short-term challenges, meteorologists expect conditions to improve by the end of the week. Authorities continue to urge caution, especially for those with respiratory conditions, travelers, and residents in avalanche-prone areas.
