Iranian-backed groups attack US base in eastern Syria
Iranian-backed groups stationed in Deir ez-Zor launch rocket attack on the Koniko Gas Plant
Iranian-backed groups carried out a rocket attack on the Koniko Gas Plant in eastern Syria, where U.S. forces are stationed.
The attack, launched from the western bank of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor, resulted in smoke near the base.
It is unknown whether there were any casualties in the attack and U.S. officials have not yet commented on the attack.
On Jan. 24, unidentified aircraft targeted military vehicles belonging to Iranian-backed groups allied with the Bashar al-Assad regime in Deir ez-Zor at a border crossing between Syria and Iraq.
Deir ez-Zor territories east of the Euphrates are occupied by the U.S.-backed PKK/YPG, while the Assad regime controls the provincial capital and surrounding areas.
The U.S. justifies its alliance with PKK/YPG against Daesh/ISIS, though Türkiye argues against using one terrorist group to combat another.
The PKK, labeled a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the U.S., and the EU, has been responsible for over 40,000 deaths in its 35-year campaign against Türkiye, with the YPG serving as its Syrian branch.
