As the 2024 elections approach, Türkiye Today spotlights Murat Kurum’s significant journey and the city’s pivotal role in shaping Turkish politics through the insightful video, “AK Party’s Murat Kurum: Race for Istanbul, kingmaker of Turkish politics”

Istanbul, a global trade hub and the kingmaker of Turkish politics, reached its zenith during President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s mayoral tenure. However, the AK Party lost the city to the opposition in 2019. With the 2024 elections approaching, the AK Party aims to reclaim Istanbul by nominating Murat Kurum, former minister of environment, urbanization and climate change, known for his extensive career and urban development expertise.

Türkiye Today released a comprehensive video titled “AK Party’s Murat Kurum: Race for Istanbul, kingmaker of Turkish politics,” highlighting Istanbul’s significance in Türkiye’s local elections and Murat Kurum’s pivotal role in the upcoming 2024 race. 

The video delves into Kurum’s life, starting with his birth in 1976 in Ankara and his upbringing shaped by his father, a civil engineer. It traces his academic transition to urban transformation following the 1999 earthquake in Kocaeli, detailing his early career in construction. It also spotlights his pivotal roles in public housing agencies such as TOKI and Emlak Konut, where he focused on ensuring safe housing in Istanbul, and finally, his tenure as the minister of environment, urbanization and climate change during which he tackled numerous issues that Türkiye have faced.
