Greek official says the U.S. sent a letter to the Greek Navy on Jan. 16, adding that the U.S. looked favorably on Greece’s proposal in principle

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said Greece is in talks with the U.S. for the production of 7 new generation “Constellation” type frigates, which Greece plans to purchase from the U.S. in Greek shipyards.

Dendias, who made a statement after he met with Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (SCGA) Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas, stated that Athens is in talks with the U.S. regarding the joint production of new generation “Constellation” type frigates.

Stating that Greece notified the U.S. of its request for the production of 7 “Constellation” type frigates in Greek shipyards, Dendias said that the U.S. sent a letter to the Greek Navy on Jan. 16. The Greek official said that the U.S. looked favorably on this proposal of Greece in principle.

“If an agreement is reached, Greece can participate in this program from the very beginning, at the planning stage, in line with the needs of the Greek Navy. This could be a huge step for both the Greek Navy and the Greek shipyard industry,” Dendias underscored.

This prospective deal aligns with Greece’s broader efforts to modernize its naval forces and enhance its defense manufacturing capabilities, marking a significant stride in the country’s military collaborations with the U.S.
