The Turkish Super League title race is heating up as Galatasaray prepares to host Fenerbahce in one of the world’s fiercest intercontinental rivalries on Monday at 8 p.m. (GMT+3) at Rams Park in Istanbul.

Galatasaray remains unbeaten this season, securing 20 wins and three draws in 23 matches. With 63 points, the defending champions lead the league, holding a six-point advantage over second-placed Fenerbahce.

The high-stakes encounter is set to be one of the most crucial derbies in recent history. Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce aims to close the gap with their arch-rivals, while Galatasaray is determined to extend their lead in pursuit of a third consecutive league title.

Expected line-ups and tactical approaches

According to the football market analysis platform Transfermarkt, the combined squad value of both teams stands at €519.23 million ($543.76 million), making this the most valuable intercontinental derby in history. Galatasaray‘s squad is valued at €277.23 million, while Fenerbahce’s players are worth €242 million.

Galatasaray, under the guidance of Okan Buruk, is expected to employ a 4-2-3-1 formation, prioritizing high-pressing and direct play.

Despite their strong league form, recent performances—particularly their elimination by AZ Alkmaar in the UEFA Europa League play-offs—have led to criticism of Buruk’s tactical decisions.

However, Galatasaray has demonstrated remarkable consistency in domestic competition, extending their unbeaten run in the Super League to 24 matches, with 21 wins and three draws during this stretch.

The Lions’ last league defeat came in the 37th week of the 2023-24 season when they suffered a 1-0 home loss to Fenerbahce.

Mourinho, on the other hand, is likely to field a 3-4-1-2 formation, focusing on patient build-up play, exploiting spaces, and utilizing aerial threats.

The yellow Canaries, which had a 10-match winning streak in the league earlier this season, will be without injured midfielders Ismail Yuksek and Diego Carlos.

Meanwhile, Caglar Soyuncu and Alexander Djiku’s availability will be determined by the coaching staff before the match.

Despite a quiet start to the season, Fenerbahce has recently gained momentum, attracting attention with its performances in the league, UEFA Europa League, and Turkish Cup.

In their previous league meeting in the sixth week of this season, Galatasaray defeated Fenerbahce 3-1 away, with goals from Lucas Torreira, Dries Mertens, and Gabriel Sara. Fenerbahce’s only goal came from an Edin Dzeko penalty.

Galatasaray has dominated recent league derbies, securing three wins, one draw, and one defeat in their last five encounters against Fenerbahce. During this period, they have scored nine goals while conceding only two.

Controversy over foreign referee appointment

For the first time in Turkish football history, a foreign referee will officiate the derby. Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic has been appointed following controversy over domestic referees’ decisions in recent matches.

“We want the focus to be on the quality of football rather than tensions between the teams. Our biggest clubs should set an example for young players and children. The entire football community should witness a match free from disputes,” Turkish Football Federation (TFF) President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu stated on Feb. 19 while announcing the decision.

Vincic will be assisted by Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic, while Kadir Saglam will serve as the fourth official.

Fenerbahce welcomed the decision, while Galatasaray strongly opposed it. In a statement released by the club, Galatasaray criticized the TFF, saying, “Stop creating chaos—do what is necessary for Turkish football.”

‘Turks view Galatasaray vs Fenerbahce as a World Cup match’

Speaking to the Brazilian press, Galatasaray’s midfielder Gabriel Sara compared the upcoming derby to a World Cup competition due to the intense rivalry and recent controversies.

“The rivalry here is truly surreal. Even for us Brazilians, who come from a strong football culture, it is astonishing,” Sara said.

“Although we have a slight advantage in the standings, we must remain cautious,” he added.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray legend Felipe Melo predicted the final score, saying, “I believe Galatasaray will win 2-1.”

Fenerbahce’s former Dutch star Dirk Kuyt, who scored the winning goal in a 2014-2015 season derby in front of the Yellow Canaries fans, reminisced about the moment. “I still hear the roar after my goal,” Kuyt said.
