U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the closure of the U.S. military base in Alexandroupoli, Greece, according to the Greek newspaper Dimokratia.

However, the reports remain unconfirmed by Greek defense officials.

The reported decision from Trump may indicate a shift in U.S. military strategy in the region against Russia and has reportedly raised concerns among Greek officials.

US military base in Alexandroupoli and Türkiye’s concerns

The U.S. base in the region was a major source of tension between the U.S. and Türkiye.

However, U.S. officials repeatedly reassured Türkiye that the U.S. forces’ deployment in the area was not against the country.

“Greece, as a whole, has turned into a U.S. military base,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had said in 2021 referring to United States’ numerous military installations in Greece’s Alexandroupoli (Dedeagac).

Alexandroupoli is a Greek port located on the Aegean Sea right next to the Turkish border, at the north-eastern tip of Greece.

Greek media outlet Dimokratia reported the claim from the front page. However, the outlet’s claim on US military base in Alexandroupoli has not yet been verified by US or Greek sources.

Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S. military presence from Alexandroupoli was made following a joint request from Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to Greek media.

US military base in Alexandroupoli: Key logistics hub for NATO

The Alexandroupoli base has served as a key logistical hub for U.S. and NATO operations in southeastern Europe.

Its presence has been controversial, especially with Türkiye, which has consistently opposed U.S. military activities in the area.
