Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan underscored Türkiye’s support for diplomatic efforts in the Russia-Ukraine war, reaffirmed its commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity, and expressed deep concerns over potential escalations in Gaza during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Ankara.

Türkiye backs diplomatic efforts for Russia-Ukraine conflict

Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to supporting diplomatic solutions to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, particularly in light of new discussions between the United States and Russia.

“The recent security guarantees and other topics discussed in meetings between the U.S. and Russia are matters that we are also closely following,” Fidan said.

“Türkiye is ready to take any steps that contribute to peace,” he added.

Referring to the U.S.-led initiative aimed at negotiating an end to the war, Fidan stated, “This aligns with the policy we have pursued since the beginning of the conflict. We place great importance on this initiative as a results-oriented approach. We believe that a resolution can only be achieved through negotiations involving both parties.”

He also reiterated Türkiye’s willingness to facilitate diplomatic efforts. “Just as we have done before, we are ready to host negotiations,” he added.

Security in the Black Sea

Addressing regional security, Fidan stressed Türkiye’s determination to uphold safe passage in the Black Sea.

“Ensuring maritime security in the Black Sea remains a priority for us. If implemented, this step would be a crucial confidence-building measure,” he said.

Fidan noted that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan continues to place great importance on ending the war and reaffirmed Türkiye’s active role in peace efforts.

Common ground on Syria

Fidan and Lavrov also discussed the latest developments in Syria, with the Turkish foreign minister emphasizing the importance of preventing separatist movements in the war-torn country.

“We firmly believe in preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and unity. We share a common view with Russia that separatist movements must be prevented,” he stated.

“Moreover, there is no tolerance for terrorist organizations establishing a foothold in Syria,” he added.

Concerns over Israeli actions in Gaza and the West Bank

Shifting focus to the Middle East, Fidan voiced strong concerns over Israel’s ongoing actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, warning of the risks of further escalation.

“We are deeply concerned about the possibility of Prime Minister (Benjamin) Netanyahu resuming the war. A new genocide must never be allowed,” he said.

He criticized the Israeli government’s approach, stating, “Netanyahu’s administration and those aligned with him are exploiting current events for Israel’s expansionist agenda.”

Fidan called for international intervention to halt Israeli military operations and prevent forced displacement of Palestinians. “The forced migration of Palestinians from their lands is unacceptable. These efforts are doomed to fail,” he asserted.

He welcomed Russia’s position against Palestinian displacement and urged the international community to take a decisive stance. “It is imperative to put an end to Israel’s aggressions in Palestine, Lebanon, and Syria,” he stated.

Türkiye monitoring US-Russia talks on security guarantees

Regarding recent discussions between the U.S. and Russia, Fidan noted that Türkiye is closely monitoring developments surrounding security guarantees.

“Türkiye is prepared to take any necessary steps that contribute to peace,” he said. He also highlighted President Erdogan’s leadership in ensuring that diplomatic channels remain open.

Türkiye’s approach to BRICS, economic alliances

Fidan addressed Türkiye’s approach to international economic cooperation, highlighting its interest in diverse economic partnerships while maintaining strong trade ties with the European Union.

“Economic cooperation is essential for resilience against crises and achieving development goals. While we have a long-standing EU accession process, recent years have shown that identity politics are hindering progress,” he said.

Fidan acknowledged Türkiye’s engagement with BRICS but noted that the organization is not currently accepting new members. “We have expressed our interest, but BRICS has halted membership expansion for now,” he explained.

He contrasted BRICS with the EU, stating, “Unlike the EU, BRICS is notably inclusive, bringing together nations of diverse religions, cultures, and civilizations.”

Israel’s regional strategy and US involvement

Fidan also addressed Israel’s regional strategy, particularly concerning Syria and Lebanon, criticizing its use of U.S. military support as a tool for expansion.

“Netanyahu’s administration is pursuing an aggressive security strategy that relies on occupation and military offensives. When its own resources fall short, it brings in U.S. support like a forklift to reinforce its plans,” he said.

He warned that this policy could backfire, destabilizing the region further.

“This approach not only fuels regional instability but also fails to serve Israel’s long-term security interests,” Fidan noted.

He urged Israel to reconsider its course.

“While there is still time, Netanyahu’s government must abandon these self-destructive policies. The international community must exert the necessary pressure to prevent further escalation,” he concluded.
