Former CIA employee sentenced to 40 years in prison

Former CIA officer, Joshua Adam Schulte, is sentenced to 40 years over the leak of classified information in the agency’s history

A former CIA officer, Joshua Schulte, has been handed a 40-year prison sentence for his involvement in leaking a substantial cache of classified hacking tools to WikiLeaks and the possession of child abuse images. 

The 35-year-old faced charges ranging from espionage, computer hacking, contempt of court, and false statements to the FBI to child pornography. 

The prosecutors characterized Schulte’s actions as “the largest data breach in the history of the CIA,” involving the transmission of stolen information to WikiLeaks. 

The charges against Schulte included the leaking of the CIA’s “Vault 7” tools.

Schulte consistently denied the charges and, in turn, accused the CIA and FBI of making him a scapegoat for the public release of a substantial amount of CIA secrets by WikiLeaks in 2017. 

The case raised concerns about the potential consequences of unauthorized disclosures of classified information in the age of digital information
