French teachers demand better conditions

National Education Unions in France issued a call on Thursday urging teachers to stage strikes and participate in demonstrations. The move comes as educators express concerns regarding salaries, working conditions and the government’s treatment of public schools.

Several thousand teachers marched from Place Edmond Rostand in the 6th arrondissement of Paris to the National Education Ministry, aiming to warn the government about perceived neglect of public schools and inadequate teacher salaries.

Protesters criticized Education Minister Amelie Oudea-Castera, who faced backlash for placing her children in a private school, citing “loads of hours with no proper replacement teacher” at her son’s public primary school. Critics accused her of being “disconnected from reality.”

The teachers’ strike underscores broader concerns about the state of public education and educators’ working conditions in France.
