One of the most recognizable symbols of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), the wild donkeys of Karpaz, have become the target of a brutal attack. Fourteen of these unique animals, which roam freely in the national park, were found shot dead at close range near Dipkarpaz landfill.

The massacre has sparked outrage across the country, with political leaders, animal rights organizations, and the public demanding justice.

Unique breed under threat

The donkeys of Karpaz, a larger breed compared to regular donkeys, have been living freely in the region under the protection of Taskent Natural Park since 2016. Considered sacred by Greek Cypriots, these animals have also become a major attraction for tourists.

However, despite their symbolic importance, they have occasionally been targeted by farmers who complain about the damage they cause to crops. This latest attack is one of the most severe incidents in recent years.

Who killed the iconic donkeys of Cyprus?

The brutal killing of the donkeys has led to a massive outcry on social media. Animal rights groups, TRNC President Ersin Tatar, and various political parties have condemned the attack.

President Tatar issued a strong statement, saying, “As the President, I will personally ensure that this case is closely monitored.”
