Lars Klingbeil, co-chair of Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD), emphasized the need to strengthen ties with Türkiye, citing its strategic importance in diplomacy and migration management.

Strengthening German-Turkish relations

In an interview with Turkish media outlet, Hurriyet, Klingbeil stated that Chancellor Olaf Scholz is actively working to improve relations with Türkiye. Despite political differences, he stressed that Türkiye remains a crucial partner for Germany and the European Union.

“Türkiye is already geographically part of Europe, and it serves as a bridge between Asia and the Arab world,” Klingbeil noted.

He highlighted Türkiye’s role in mediating conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, arguing that collaboration with Türkiye aligns with Germany’s interests.

Türkiye’s role in European security and migration

Klingbeil reaffirmed SPD’s support for Türkiye’s European Union membership, though he acknowledged the stalled accession process. “Both sides need to put in the effort to keep the EU membership perspective alive,” he said.

Regarding migration, Klingbeil pointed to Türkiye’s key role in controlling irregular migration to Europe. He praised the EU-Türkiye migration deal, which has significantly reduced the number of asylum seekers reaching Europe. “We must continue working with Türkiye on this matter,” he added.

Commitment to dual citizenship policy

Klingbeil also addressed Germany’s citizenship laws, defending SPD’s Modern Citizenship Act, which allows dual nationality. With the upcoming federal elections, concerns have been raised about opposition efforts to reverse the legislation.

“People who have lived in this country for years should have a say in shaping its future,” Klingbeil stated, reaffirming SPD’s commitment to maintaining the law.

Growing strategic importance of Türkiye

The SPD leader emphasized that Türkiye’s regional influence has grown due to recent geopolitical developments, including conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. He underscored the need for close cooperation between Berlin and Ankara in diplomatic and security matters.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to meet Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today, on Feb. 18 following his visit to Saudi Arabia.

Discussions are anticipated to focus on Türkiye’s potential role in peace negotiations and security cooperation.
